“When United Limb and Brace started operation in 1914, prostheses were fabricated from willow wood, leather, steel, and rawhide – very different than materials used today, many of which hadn’t been invented in 1914. These include woven carbon fiber, plastics, and some closed cell foams. The people who fabricated limbs in 1914 were different as well; they were simple craftsmen – shoemakers, carpenters, and tinknockers – who worked at their craft for the benefit of amputees. Todays certified practitioner is a highly trained and educated individual who works in conjunction with the patient’s medical staff to provide the best care possible. The goal today is not just to ensure ambulation but to provide the highest level of functionality possible.”
